Dating from the Neolithic period (- 2,500 years), intriguing statue-menhirs dot the eastern part of the Lacaune mountains. Shaped either by hammering with a hard stone pebble or by deep pecking to create a bas-relief carving, the best-preserved examples bear the social attributes of masculinity or femininity.
Along with menhirs and the painted or sculpted caves of the Upper Paleolithic (- 12,000 years), these statue-menhirs are among the rare artistic manifestations to have survived from such remote times. Studies of them have yet to provide definitive answers. Enigmatic and silent, they serve as a simple yet elegant reminder of the extent of our uncertainties.

Dans le haut du village, prendre le chemin qui part entre une maison et la croix de fer. Il descend dans la vallée du ruisseau de l’Espeyres. Franchir le pont et poursuivre par le chemin à droite. Laisser un chemin à gauche. Le chemin domine des prés avant de passer à flanc dans les bois. Continuer par la piste à droite puis, à l’intersection suivante, partir encore à droite et grimper par le sentier. Emprunter à droite la piste forestière qui descend à Pante.

Gravir la voie bétonnée qui mène au Massié (! > panorama sur les vallons !).

Suivre la D 169 à droite puis le chemin à droite. Il conduit à Catonières.

Descendre dans le hameau et, avant le ruisseau, partir à gauche dans l’herbe. Le sentier, bordé de buis, traverse un talweg, puis remonte à gauche dans les prés. Franchir le portillon et continuer par le large chemin. Prendre la route à droite, laisser la ferme de Lardenas à droite et poursuivre par la route qui s’élève (point coté 885 m) en face.

Dans la descente, s’engager à droite sur la large piste. Laisser la piste à gauche et arriver à une nouvelle intersection. > Hors sentier: par la piste de gauche, accès au point de vue du plo de Canac.

Continuer par la piste principale. Elle contourne le plo de Canac par l’ouest puis dessine un virage en épingle.

Quitter le sentier en direction des ruines du château. Longer l’édifice par la gauche (possibilité d’y pénétrer) avant de descendre retrouver le sentier abandonné plus haut ( ! > descente longue et abrupte !).

Poursuivre la descente, puis emprunter la D 162 à droite pour rejoindre le point de départ.
