Nestled in a setting of verdant mountains, Lake Laouzas is teeming with perch, trout, carp, and other zander—a dream for fishermen! This artificial body of water is a fine engineering achievement and part of a series of EDF reservoirs. Built on the Vèbre River, a tributary of the Agout, its arch dam measures 250m long and 50m high, holding a volume of 45 million m³ over a surface area of 320 hectares.
When the lake is ""full,"" its waters are periodically drawn into 18km of underground pipe, which crosses the Somail mountains before arriving, 600m lower, at the Montahut power plant to produce 270 million kWh annually. A dream for engineers? A great place for fishermen.

À la ferme de Rieu-Montagné, partir tout droit par le chemin sous le musée (GR® de Pays balisé en rouge-jaune). Sur le goudron, avancer tout droit. À la patte d’oie, monter à droite ; 30 m après, tourner à gauche. Au croisement, traverser vers le chemin du Rouayras. Poursuivre tout droit. Aux deux pattes d’oie suivantes, prendre à gauche.

Sur le goudron, franchir le pont à droite (laisser le GR® de Pays sur la droite). Traverser la D 62 et monter en face. À la première intersection, monter à droite. Sur le plat, progresser tout droit (à gauche, liaison possible avec le sentier de découverte de Payrac, PR 29) ; 80 m plus loin, tourner à droite.

Sur le goudron, virer en épingle à gauche. À la première intersection, aller tout droit. À la seconde, quitter le bitume pour le chemin à droite. Grimper jusqu’à la plate-forme du Besset, bifurquer à droite, puis monter le raidillon tout droit (! > bien refermer le portillon !) ; 40 m après, aller à droite. Au croisement, poursuivre tout droit sur la piste. Au carrefour, choisir la première piste à droite. À la patte d’oie 200 m après, s’engager dans le chemin de gauche. Suivre ce chemin jusqu’à la route.

Sur la route, tourner à gauche ; 50 m plus loin, prendre le chemin sur la lande à droite. Aussitôt après, partir à gauche (montée en zigzag abrupte).

Sur la plate-forme du Montalet, deux sentiers se présentent au choix à droite pour rejoindre le sommet. Revenir au point 4 par le même itinéraire.

Continuer sur la route en descendant. Laisser la piste de droite (retour sur le GR® de Pays des Monts et Lacs en Haut Languedoc jusqu’au départ).

200 m après, bifurquer sur le chemin à droite. Avancer tout droit. À la patte d’oie, descendre à droite. Passer sous la ruine de Proubencous. Contourner la stabulation à main gauche. Après le dernier bâtiment, tourner à droite.

Sur la route, prendre à droite. Traverser Pontis. Descendre le premier chemin à gauche ; 100 m après, bifurquer à gauche. À Cabot, virer à droite. Sur la D 62, tourner à droite pour rejoindre le pont (étape 2) et le trajet aller.
